Bunk Beds For The Soul

Back in the seventies, I was just a little kid, but one of my fondest memories was going to visit my grandparents on my mother’s side. It was a six hour trip by car, so whenever we visited, we always stayed overnight. Back then, it was just me and my sister, my mom and my dad. Besides the obvious attention and food that was constant throughout the visit, one of the best things about the trip was being able to sleep in bunk beds that my grandparents had in a spare room.

We loved those beds; me and my sister would always take turns sleeping on the top. As soon as we found out we were going we made sure we knew who’s turn it was for the top bunk. We could hardly wait. Climbing up and down the ladder to the top bunk was one of the best parts. We would always take the blankets from the beds and hang them over the bottom bunk to make a fort.

I remember finding the bunk beds unusual because they seemed so sturdy and heavy to me, and they were painted white. The white made the beds stand out in the room which was darker, and which is why I really only remember the beds and not the room itself.

As the years passed, my sister got older and she didn’t make the trip as often with the rest of the family. I was lonely being there by myself, having the top bunk all to myself. It just wasn’t the same with just me there. I would still build the fort when she wasn’t there, but I would quickly get bored and find something else to do.

As I was older and in my college dorm cheap bunk bed one night, I received news that my grandfather had passed away. This moment was a sad one for me as I’m sure it was for my sister. I’m going to miss those times together.
